How to Prompt Suno for Duets and Vocal Handoffs
Assign two singers, hand off after a verse, and land a shared chorus — here's exactly how to set it up.
Define both voices first
A convincing duet starts with two clearly described voices. In the generator, set an opening vocalist and a later/second vocalist, then choose a voice type for each — for example a male baritone opening and a female contralto response.
Being specific about range and texture (gravelly, warm, airy, powerful) gives the AI song lyrics generator and Suno a clearer target, even though Suno may interpret voices differently between takes.
Set the transition point
Decide where the handoff happens — after verse one, after verse two, or at the bridge — and put it in the Transition field. You can also type a plain-language direction in the chat box, such as 'make the female enter after verse two'.
The generator labels lyric sections with the vocalist role, like [Male Verse 1] and [Female Contralto Verse], so the handoff is obvious when you paste into Suno.
Land a shared chorus
Turn on the duet option so the final chorus is sung together. A shared, hopeful chorus is the payoff of a handoff and ties both perspectives together.
Generate, review the labeled lyrics, then copy the Styles prompt and Lyrics into Suno's Custom mode.
